Our Region
Architecture49 has built a rich legacy in the Atlantic Canada, spanning more than 70 years of practice designing and delivering projects across all four Atlantic Provinces. The region has a small population spread out over a large geographic area, sometimes located in isolated areas. We experience crazy weather patterns (our favorite topic of conversation) that range from extreme rain fall to heavy snow and category 2 hurricanes. The harsh environment requires our practice to be that much more critical of a building design and detailing to suit our extreme climate. However, calm, beautiful days and spectacular landscape and seascape add to the diversity of experience. Undaunted by challenge and resourceful by nature, Atlantic Canadians pride themselves in a collaborative spirit and a warmth and openness that naturally draws people in no matter where they come from. This is ultimately reflected in how we practice architecture and we’re extremely proud of our local accomplishments. These include the first LEED Certified and first LEED Gold buildings in Nova Scotia, numerous Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Architecture, being active supporters of our community and professional associations, among others. Throughout our history we’ve specialized in a variety of building types including retail stores, schools and hospitals, and more recently we have added cultural, residential and defense work to our broad portfolio of work.
