The Health Sciences Centre Women’s Hospital is a new women and newborn centre reflecting the best current practices in health care delivery and sustainability. The design is rooted in the philosophy of patient and family-centered care, concepts developed through intensive integrated design charrettes with public, community residents and staff groups. From the single-patient rooms with large windows, to the layout of medical units, the new hospital is intended to be people friendly.
Covered Ambulance bays, Triage, Ambulatory Care, Fetal Assessment and retail services are on the first level. The second through fourth floors house the 60 single-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), 15 Labour Delivery Recovery Rooms, three Operating Rooms for caesarian sections, a Surgical Centre with four Operating Rooms for gynecological related surgeries, 93 inpatient beds and a four-bed Special Observation Unit. Level Four provides a view and access to a rooftop deck. Underground parking for 150 vehicles, and spiritual and ceremonial space for smudging and other cultural practices are also included.
