Sidney Center for Plant Health Modernization and Refurbishment

Sidney, British Columbia (Joint Venture with WSP)

The Sidney Centre for Plant Health (SCPH) is a world-class plant health diagnostic and research facility for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. As Canada’s only post-entry quarantine, research, and diagnostic facility for imported plant material, SCPH plays a vital role in safeguarding plant health. The facility prioritizes sustainability, aligning with Canada’s net-zero carbon goals and targeting LEED Gold certification. Energy efficiency, water conservation, and indoor environmental quality are key design elements.

The facility supports leading-edge research with optimized lab spaces, direct access to outdoor test crops, screen houses, and integrated greenhouses. Accessibility and inclusivity are central, incorporating the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification and Living Building Challenge principles. Indigenous engagement was embedded in the project through integrated artwork and an Indigenous Benefits Plan supporting the regional community. SCPH sets a new standard in sustainable laboratory design - fostering innovation, collaboration, and environmental stewardship.
