Shamattawa First Nation is located near Hudson Bay at the confluence of two great rivers that give the community its identity—God’s River and the Echoing River. The goal for this project was to provide a welcoming Healthcare Facility that resonated with the community. In consultation with the First Nation, the Shamattawa Health Centre (Kisemattawa Minoyawin Waskihekan) takes design cues from a traditional wood lodge, utilizing earth tones and wood accents. The 2 113 sq m building incorporates space for community and healthcare programming including multiple exam rooms, an emergency room, a pharmacy, office spaces, community health program spaces, dental treatment rooms and a traditional healing room. The facility also provides 12 residential suites for nurses and other healthcare professionals who will be stationed in the community.
