The intent of this project is to provide an internationally recognized facility for diagnosis of diseases such as brucellosis, TB, durina, glanders, equine infectious anaemia, piroplasmosis, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, leptospirosis, rinotraqueitis infectious bovine viral diarrhea bovine and parainfluencza-3. The animals to be studied will range from Bovine of up to 500kg to smaller pigs, sheep and goats. A primary intent in the design of the facility is to provide flexibility, to accommodate a wide range of animal sizes and types, and to provide containment for a wide range of diseases in order that CENASA will be prepared for any issues that threaten agricultural animals in Mexico in the future.
The facility will consist of a BSL3Ag animal containment laboratory space, surrounded by a perimeter of lower containment areas and supporting functions which provide a buffer between the high risk containment area and the surrounding environment. The BSL3Ag space will include three animal holding and procedure areas, a necropsy room, a small laboratory and a secure repository for safely storing select agents. Planning of the facility is arranged to achieve the highest degree of efficiency, safety and simplicity of operations. The facility is also designed to provide a high degree of flexibility to accommodate a wide range of animal subjects and a wide range of research and diagnostic work.
The building will be essentially a two-storey structure with all functional program areas on one level, a partial basement for treatment of contaminated effluent and carcasses and a partial upper level for HEPA filtration of supply and exhaust air. The facility plans also take into consideration the potential to expand and allow for the containment area, office area and supporting functions to each grow in the future without interference between functional components.
