Cornwall Community Hospital’s McConnell site is home to an outpatient mental health services clinic. As more Ontarians experience some degree of mental illness, it became evident the current model of sending patients to three different treatment sites was no longer feasible.
The standalone building used a co-location model to bring these services together under one roof. The building was designed as an innovative mental health care facility that centers around the wellbeing of the patient. Services offered include Child and Youth Mental Health Services, Community Withdrawal Management Services, Assertive Community Treatment: (ACT), Adult Counselling Treatment, Mental Health, Crisis Team/Peer Support, Geriatric Mental Health Services, and Addiction Services. The result of co-locating these services has reduced wait times for patients and allows care providers to work together more effectively in providing more comprehensive services to patients.
The design incorporates a central courtyard with passive solar design to maximize visual comfort and reduce energy use throughout the building. The central courtyard can aid in the wellbeing of the patients and staff who care for them by providing a connection to nature.
