The project mandate was to consolidate all internet, radio and sound production from their iconic Sackville street address in Halifax to the site of their existing television studios at Bell Rd. CBC Halifax's building design responded to the urban fabric of its important address at the intersection of Bell Rd and Summer street with a design solution that acknowledges the historic Halifax commons and the thousands of commuters that pass by on their way to and from work in the downtown core.
The design’s most prominent feature is the cantilevered, glazed newsroom that gestures toward the Halifax Citadel and provides transparency of the primary 24 hour building function. To emphasize the on air activity of the building, an illuminated light accent band around primary studio spaces will activate during live ‘on air’ broadcasts.
The CBC renovation and expansion project incorporated energy efficient building systems, with the intent of a LEED Silver certification. Design features included daylighting and views, sustainable building materials, district energy heating, energy efficient lighting and water reduction systems. The project was tendered, but not completed due to a reallocation of budget.
