Breton Education Centre

New Waterford, Nova Scotia

Breton Education Centre (BEC) is part of the larger CBRM Health Care Redevelopment Project in New Waterford, creating an integrated hub combining health and education—the New Waterford Hub (NWH).

The project includes a health centre, 60-bed long-term care home, 12-bed short-stay unit, community food bank, wellness centre, and a grade 6–12 school, forming a multi-functional community hub. This model fosters intergenerational learning, hands-on education, and health-care-related programming for students.

The school features a welcoming main entry courtyard leading to a shared cafeteria that connects all wings. Specialty wings include a skilled trades and production area supporting career and technical education, and an athletics wing with two gymnasiums, enhanced spectator bleachers, active living spaces, and universal change rooms. Educational wings are organized around a distributed model with science labs, classrooms, group workspaces, and breakout areas, promoting flexible, collaborative learning.
