Anwebiiwining, meaning “a place where one rests,” is an Indigenous outdoor learning environment at Confederation College in Thunder Bay. Developed through close collaboration with College leadership and Indigenous community members, the project reflects traditional land-based teachings while providing contemporary learning spaces. At its centre is a ceremonial fire pit, constructed with the support of trades students, surrounded by stone seating to encourage gatherings for storytelling and cultural exchange. A secondary fire pit dedicated to cooking, an accessible boardwalk, and integrated storage enhance both functionality and inclusivity, while a pergola, abstracted from Indigenous architectural forms, offers shelter and symbolic resonance. The space is designed for flexibility, supporting ceremonies, teaching, and community events in a setting rooted in cultural significance. By blending Indigenous knowledge and modern landscape architecture, Anwebiiwining strengthens Confederation College’s commitment to reconciliation and provides a lasting place for connection, reflection, and learning.
