Alderwood is a 70-bed replacement facility with 12 beds dedicated to residential care. Alderwood's vision was to provide a home that supported and celebrated the aging resident as an integral member of the community. The design response was a resident-centered design philosophy featuring smaller home areas (11-12 beds) with open-concept neighborhoods, private rooms and ensuites, minimized travel distances, localized food preparation and dining, direct access to therapeutic gardens and integrated nursing facilities that supported functionality without compromising the home-like qualities.
“[The design team’s] knowledge and innovative thinking helped us to realize a truly unique building design that not only looks and feels like a home, it also provides a more supportive, resident-centred care environment enhancing quality of care and ultimately quality of life. We not only have a beautiful building, we have a wonderful “home” for our residents.” Arlene Morrison, Former Administrator, Alderwood
Alderwood was designed and constructed following sustainable design principles achieving LEED Silver Certification. Notable initiatives include innovations to protect and preserve site, passive energy technologies including exhaust heat recovery and solar heated domestic hot water, a high performance building envelope, radiant in-slab heating and high efficiency mechanical equipment and appliances lowering operating costs, lessening impacts on our natural environments and ultimately improving the quality of indoor environments.
