The University College of the Fraser Valley’s 7,000-seat spectator hub was developed as the flagship of the campus, a recognizable icon for the college as well as the City of Abbotsford. As the home to the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat—the farm team of the NHL’s Calgary Flames—the facility is designed to accommodate events seamlessly, with public and performer spaces that are welcoming, comfortable, scalable, open and secure.
“This community space is one of the most exciting gathering points in the region. Designed for unparalleled accessibility and sustainability, the Abbotsford Centre has generated enthusiasm and excellent return on investment in its first year alone.” Albert Paquette, National Sector Leader, Sports & Entertainment
Its access points are optimized for ease of loading and unloading, and mechanical maintenance. Event space includes production offices, dressing and green rooms, training areas, and coaching offices, with constant accessibility to entertainment lighting and rigging for speakers, draping and specialty lighting. The building’s mechanical and HVAC systems are distinct to meet the diverse zoning requirements of the facility. The arena bowl is served by an array of systems for excellent ventilation, smoke and gas, and humidity control, with unique and independent controls for the arena bowl as opposed to the back-of-house offices, administration, and concession and public concourse areas.
Drawing from a spectacular site, the design team drew from a palette of forms, colours and textures that considered both context and the flow, movement and enjoyment of visitors during events. A dramatic and unique destination, the space reflects the synergy between nature and technology in a light and contemporary way.
