A49 is proud to announce Kevin Humeniuk as Sustainable Labs Canada’s (SLCan) new President. As A49’s National Sector Leader for Science & Technology, Kevin brings over a decade of dedication to the SL Can organization and has a strong history of leading complex laboratory projects across Canada. As President, Kevin aims to strengthen global partnerships, build on past accomplishments, and advance sustainable laboratory design across the country.
Since its first workshop, SLCan has grown from under 50 members to over 300, reflecting its impact and the strength of its community. The organization envisions a future where laboratories stand at the forefront of climate rehabilitation, carbon reduction, and responsible energy use. SLCan aims to position Canada as a leader in laboratory sustainability by leveraging knowledge and expertise to continue the development of high-performance science facilities worldwide.
Kevin’s journey with SLCan began in 2013 as a founding board member, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s foundation. Over the years, he has held various leadership roles, including Vice President and Chair of the Professional Development Committee, where he organized webinars, curated website content, and developed training resources. In 2023, he served as co-chair of the SLCan Annual Conference in Halifax, playing a key role in organizing the event. He also encouraged many A49 team members to attend the conference and present their work.
As president, Kevin is committed to building on successes and driving the organization forward. One of his key goals is to strengthen international relationships and enhance collaborations with organizations like the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) and the European Association for Sustainable Laboratories (EGNATON) to elevate SLCan’s global presence. To continue, he aims to address the growing demand for education on laboratory design and sustainability. By developing new training programs, materials, and resources, Kevin hopes to address the unique challenges of laboratory design in Canada, including evolving climate standards and biosafety regulations, and updated building codes.
“The Canadian context is critical when it comes to laboratory design and sustainability,” Kevin shared. “SLCan is about creating a space where we can push the boundaries of laboratory design and sustainability. By working together, we can help shape the future of science and create a lasting impact for generations to come.”
Looking ahead, Kevin envisions a collaborative SLCan community where business development and professional growth are intertwined. “SLCan is not just about individual development, it’s about creating partnerships and opportunities that benefit the entire industry,” he emphasized.
A49 congratulates Kevin on his new adventure and invites its members and the broader laboratory community to join in supporting Kevin’s vision for a sustainable and innovative future. Together, we can build on our shared achievements and drive forward the mission of Sustainable Laboratories Canada.
