In a celebration that marks a significant leap towards fostering community bonds, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Beechville Lakeside Timberlea Recreation Centre (BLT) took place last December. Replacing the aging Lakeside Recreation Centre, which was originally a school built in the 1950’s, the new facility is a testament to visionary design and community engagement and be a wonderful addition to the community.
The new BLT Recreation Centre, promises to be a hub that caters to the diverse needs of three local communities. With a profound focus on inclusivity, the 28,720 sq.ft. facility is set to accommodate all age groups, from preschoolers to seniors, providing spaces for physical activity, creative arts, play, and community meetings.
The building invites residents with a welcoming plaza and a conveniently located city bus stop on-site, emphasizing accessibility for all. Safety and community cohesiveness were paramount in the design process, evident in the careful separation of all playspaces from vehicular traffic. The central indoor street, drenched in natural light, will serve as the heart of the facility, connecting various program spaces seamlessly. A secure reception area near the main entry ensures oversight and a warm welcome for all visitors.
In the design of the BLT Recreation Centre, we aimed to craft not just a building, but a living, breathing hub that embraces the community's heartbeat. It's a space where people of all ages can gather, play, create, and connect—a harmonious blend of architecture and inclusivity. Chris Bouey, Project Manager, Design Architect
The program of the building includes a versatile gymnasium capable of hosting tournaments and events. Other spaces include meeting rooms, a multipurpose room, a preschool drop-in area, splashpad, a playground, an art studio, senior and youth spaces, and a community kitchen.
The BLT Recreation Centre is also committed to sustainability. Designed to be Net Zero Ready and set to achieve Rick Hanson Gold Certification, the center aligns with modern environmental standards while providing an inclusive space for all.
