This month marks both a remarkable milestone and a fond farewell as we celebrate Michael Flynn’s 30-year anniversary with A49 and his upcoming retirement.
Michael’s start with the company in 1995 marked the beginning of a three-decade long career filled with meaningful projects, evolving technology, and deep professional relationships.
A trained architect, Michael was immersed in sweeping changes in the industry, from hand-drawn perspectives to 3D modelling and virtual walkthroughs. He remarked on these changes, noting how it can shift an architect’s perspective in many ways, and mean greater outputs for clients.
However, for Michael, he shifted into business development, where he was able to find new projects and clients, and build the teams that would bring these jobs to life. During his tenure in this capacity, Michael has overseen countless projects across the country, from engineering-heavy work to major architectural renovations. Among his most memorable accomplishments is the Esquimalt Fire Hall and Emergency Response Centre—one of the last projects where he led the design himself.
Michael’s work supported clients like the Department of National Defence, the RCMP, and Public Works. From modernizing military facilities to designing cutting-edge medical centres, his impact is visible in the many spaces he’s helped create—and sometimes even renovate, years after he first designed them. More recently, Michael acknowledges his role include a level of mentorship with newer team members. Looking at his own lessons learned, Michael’s advice is to, “work hard and create your own opportunities.”
As he prepares for his retirement, Michael looks forward to slower mornings, less time spent filling out timesheets, and more time for house renovations, golf, and hockey. “I’m looking forward to doing things on my own timeline,” he shared. “It’s time.”
Michael leaves behind a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and innovation. His contributions have shaped not just buildings, but also the people and teams who worked alongside him. We wish him all the best in this next chapter and thank him for everything he’s brought to the company over the past 30 years.
Congratulations, Michael!
