Located within the Halifax Regional Municipality, the BLT (Beechville, Lakeside, Timberlea) region is a growing community where new public spaces are helping to shape local life. Architecture49 is proud to be contributing to that growth with thoughtful designs that create places that bring people together and strengthen community ties.
The recently completed Mayflower Curling Club is one of several new facilities supporting that vision. At roughly 42,460 square feet, the building features eight curling sheets, multipurpose rooms, and all the amenities players need, while also creating space for the wider community. Two large halls, beverage bars, and an elegant upper banquet hall with a full kitchen make it well suited to host weddings, ceremonies, and community events. With its distinctive entrance lantern and colourful cladding, the building celebrates the sport’s heritage while extending its role as a gathering place.
Continuing the momentum of community-focused design in the new Beechville, Lakeside, Timberlea (BLT) Community Centre brings people together through spaces made for recreation, learning, and connection. Replacing the former Lakeside Recreation Centre, the 28,720-square-foot facility welcomes visitors with an open, light-filled interior that encourages connection from the moment people arrive. A gymnasium, community kitchen, and flexible multipurpose rooms ensure the building serves residents of all ages. Designed to be Net Zero Ready and targeting Rick Hansen Gold certification, the centre reflects both environmental responsibility and accessibility as core priorities.
Looking ahead, a new Primary to Grade 9 school is in the design stage, promising to provide a modern learning environment while further strengthening Timberlea’s role as a family-oriented community. Envisioned as a hub for both education and gathering, the school will build on the momentum created by the BLT Community Centre and Mayflower Curling Club, offering spaces that support learning, play, and community connection.
Together, the BLT Community Centre, Mayflower Curling Club, and the upcoming school are shaping the community into a place where residents of all ages can learn, play, and come together. Architecture49 is proud to contribute to the community’s continued growth through designs that bring people together and strengthen community connections into the future.
