Architecture49 (A49) is proud to announce the Stouffville Line GO Expansion as part of Regional Express Rail 2’s (RER2) major infrastructure project aimed at significantly enhancing transit services along one of the Greater Toronto Area’s busiest commuter corridors. This expansion introduces all-day, two-way service every 15 minutes, designed to meet the rising demands of a rapidly growing region. By improving service frequency and efficiency, the project is part of a system-wide infrastructural upgrade that includes electrification of the rail network, new locomotives, and additional tracks—offering reliable transportation options for communities stretching from Toronto to Whitchurch-Stouffville.
A49's involvement with our Design-Build team led by EllisDon was pivotal in the station upgrades along the corridor, with a focus on three key stations: Agincourt, Unionville, and Milliken, and Grade Separation bridges connecting pedestrians at Steeles Avenue to Milliken Station. Each station was redesigned to prioritize modern design, safety through Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), accessibility, and sustainability. Key enhancements include building elements such as a new LEED Gold certified station building at Agincourt station; and upgraded platforms, new canopies, tunnels, new second track, improved pedestrian and cyclist access, and expanded parking facilities.
The Stouffville Line GO Expansion is also a testament to our commitment to sustainability and community impact. The project features energy-efficient station designs and environmentally friendly construction practices. By improving access to public transit, the expansion reduces car dependency and contributes to lowering greenhouse gas emissions that aligns with the region's environmental goals.
Reflecting our commitment to the transportation sector, the Stouffville Line GO Expansion is a significant advancement in public transit for the Greater Toronto Area. This project not only meets the needs of a growing population but also aligns with our broader mission to foster sustainable, connected communities through cost-effective, innovative, and efficient transportation solutions. In addition, the project leverages existing, under-used rail corridors that span over 400km of the region, providing further growth and opportunities for increased quality of life and economic prosperity.
