Architecture49’s Aaron Hirota was recently elected as the President of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA). After winning the OALA’s David Erb Memorial Award, A49 spoke with Aaron about his dedication to the promotion of the landscape profession. That same theme continues as we spoke to him about his term as President.
Currently the Association is pursuing adoption of a Practice Act which will recognize Landscape Architecture as a registered profession in Ontario. Aaron said he is encouraged with the progress made to date with MPPs and hopes that the Act will soon be introduced into the legislature.
Beyond that, Aaron says his priorities lie heavily in advocacy. While traditionally, advocacy for the profession is a national mandate but Aaron hopes to develop a clear pathway to include provincial specific advocacy in the OALA’s role. This is especially important when we consider the role that landscape architecture plays in each and every project. Aaron’s passion is evident when speaking with him about the way landscape architecture is rooted in context. “We’re about the connection of the project with the greater context of the area. Landscape architects consider how the general public lives and works within the places that we create,” Aaron says.
Especially in 2025 the landscape architecture profession faces several unprecedented challenges, from political uncertainties to the need for greater public awareness. Aaron acknowledges these challenges but remains committed to addressing them head-on. “With the challenges that are happening now, I am very proud and happy to help ensure the health and welfare of the general public as well as the health and welfare of our profession within the province of Ontario.”
He sees his role as President not just as an honor but as a responsibility to advocate for the profession and its role in protecting the public. “The profession of landscape architect has given me many opportunities and I’m eternally grateful for that. The opportunity to give back by serving and volunteering for the association and its many committees, including being on council and on its executive, is a huge honour.”
Aaron’s presidency at the OALA is driven by a deep commitment to the profession and a clear vision for its future. His dedication to advocacy and public awareness, coupled with the OALA’s strategic goals, sets the stage for a successful and impactful tenure.
