As learning environments evolve to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world, Architecture49 (A49) is strengthening our national leadership in educational design. Now formally recognized as one of our six core areas of practice, Education is a sector where we see growing opportunity to shape inspiring spaces that support student success and community well-being.
A Proven Track Record in Education Design
For over 30 years, A49 has delivered thoughtful, responsive educational facilities that reflect evolving pedagogical needs. Our work, from differentiated learning and enhanced safety to the integration of emerging technologies, demonstrates a deep understanding of the role learning environments play in shaping healthy, inclusive communities.
Catherine Hefler Appointed National Sector Leader, Education
To lead this expanded focus, A49 is proud to appoint Catherine Hefler as National Sector Leader, Education. With over a decade of experience leading education projects, Catherine brings expertise as a Project Architect and Educational Facility Planner, focusing on design that supports both learning and community wellness. An advocate for green design and with a background in psychology, Catherine is also an Accredited Learning Environment Planner with a strong commitment to flexibility, safety, wellness, and student success.
“Our National Education Practice has tremendous potential to create transformative learning spaces,” says Catherine. “I look forward to working with our talented team to design environments that reflect the aspirations of the communities we serve and support the evolving needs of learners across Canada.”
A Future-Focused Vision
The formal recognition of Education as a national sector in our practice reflects both regional momentum and a growing portfolio of meaningful work. As society adapts to rapid global change driven by technology, sustainability, and interconnectedness, educational spaces must respond accordingly. Today’s students are growing up in a time of constant transition. Our responsibility as designers is to create environments that cultivate critical thinking, creativity, and frameworks that reflect diverse learning needs. A49 is committed to designing spaces that help the next generation navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
Designing for Impact Across Canada
Across our regions, A49 continues to advance a shared design philosophy rooted in community connection and inhabitant experience. Our portfolio includes a wide range of projects, from playful early learning spaces, responsive K-12 schools and respectful Indigenous learning spaces to dynamic post-secondary institutions and community learning hubs. As we align our efforts nationally, we see opportunities to share innovations, consolidate expertise, and build on our strong foundation.
With Catherine’s leadership, A49’s Education practice is well-positioned to shape a more resilient, supportive, and learner-centered future for Canadian education.
