A New Community Hub Takes Shape on the Eastern Shore

ESLC Library

Construction is officially underway on the Eastern Shore Lifestyle Centre, a new community hub in Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia, that will bring educational, recreational, and emergency services into a unified, purpose-built facility. This milestone was marked on July 11th, 2025 with a groundbreaking ceremony at the project site, where community members, municipal representatives, three levels of government, and Architecture49 joined together to celebrate the start of construction on this innovative project.

Envisioned as a welcoming and inclusive place for the entire community, the centre will feature a library offering versatile spaces for reading, learning, and digital access; multi-use gathering areas designed to host community events, workshops, and social activities; a gymnasium and fitness facilities tailored to accommodate users of all ages and abilities; and a modern fire station equipped to enhance emergency response and community safety. Together, these spaces will make essential programs and services more accessible to residents.

This project builds on Architecture49’s experience designing educational, recreational, and emergency service facilities, translating their unique needs into a unified, functional, and flexible community space. Drawing inspiration from the Eastern Shore’s coastal landscape and strong sense of community, the design balances respect for local traditions with sustainable features that will serve residents today and into the future.

The groundbreaking ceremony marks an exciting milestone, and we look forward to continuing to work with the municipality and the community as the Eastern Shore Lifestyle Centre takes shape.
