As James Bridger reflects on his 30-year journey with Architecture49, he acknowledges that it's been a remarkable experience filled with both challenges and triumphs. James joined the company in September 1994, during a period of growth and change, when new talent and fresh energy were being infused into the office. His first project, the Chateau Mont-Tremblant hotel and condo at Mont-Tremblant, was just the beginning of a long and varied career that would see him involved in some of the most significant architectural projects in the region.
One of the defining moments of James' career was his work on the Montreal airport extension from 1999 to 2004. This joint venture involved four different firms and resulted in $875 million worth of construction in just five years. "It was a phenomenal design, with very challenging conditions and a stressful environment, but all aiming towards the same goal: design excellence and thoughtful collaboration," James recalls. The project was a testament to his ability to navigate complex collaborations and deliver exceptional results under pressure.
Another significant project in James' career was the rehabilitation of the West Block on Parliament Hill, which spanned over a decade from 2007 to 2019. While this project presented numerous challenges, it also provided James with invaluable lessons in leadership, client relations, and navigating the complexities of large-scale architectural undertakings. "The experiences, both good and challenging, have been instrumental in shaping my growth as an architect and leader," James reflects, emphasizing the resilience and skills developed through these experiences.
As he looks to the future, James's focus has shifted from being on the front lines of major projects to supporting and mentoring the next generation of architects. "Now, as I’m getting older, I think the most important thing is recognizing that you have a lot of talented individuals working with you and motivating them as they embark on their careers," James explains. His passion for seeing the next generation of architects succeed and take on new responsibilities is evident, as he emphasizes the importance of guiding them through their own journeys while allowing them to experience the challenges and rewards of the profession.
James' career has been a testament to the power of resilience, adaptability, and the importance of nurturing the talents of those around you.
