This twin rink sports facility is located on the campus of the University of Saskatchewan in the sports precinct, which includes a football stadium, a field house and a number of nearby sports fields. The facility includes a spectator rink with a capacity for 2520 spectators - designed for future expansion to approximately 3385 spectators. Seating in the spectator facility is arranged in a horseshoe configuration to maximize seating capacity for concerts. A community rink is adjacent to the main rink and will be used by the local Midget AAA hockey teams. Action in the community rink can be viewed from a wide concourse at the upper level of the spectator rink. Both rinks are capable of converting to sledge hockey competition by utilizing clear dasher board sections and removable raised floors in the player and penalty boxes. Each rink has 6 dressing rooms with the main spectator rink also having men’s and women’s varsity dressing rooms with a fitness/exercise room close by. Two additional dressing rooms are located adjacent to the fields and will have exterior doors that will serve the football and soccer fields.
The building includes a gymnasium with twin NBA size basketball courts complete with men’s and women’s dressing rooms. Also part of the facility is a sports science research department and fitness training centre. The main lobby contains a pro shop, administration and concession. The upper level includes a concession and a large lounge with views into the main spectator rink.
Exterior design incorporates local materials and finishes to suit campus guidelines and adjacent developments. A large two-storey glazed lobby with a sloped roof adds drama to the design and create a focal point for the large public plaza that will serve both the field house and rink.
