The Governor is a high-end mixed-use residential building located in the core of Downtown Halifax block away from the Halifax Waterfront. The Governor presents a unique offering of large and luxurious residences, ground floor commercial space, and amenities such as the rooftop terrace, overlooking the harbour. The design of the building integrates with the context of the Old South Suburb Heritage Conservation District. Surrounded by a storied neighbourhood full of heritage properties, the development embodies a careful marriage of traditional, heritage-inspired architecture and clean, minimal modernism. It was also key to consider the project’s place within the master plan for the block, including prominent neighbouring buildings such as The Alexander tower, the Benjamin Weir House, Keith’s Hall, and the Brewery Market. Our response to these considerations sculpted the scale, materiality, and articulation of the building, resulting in a project that has been praised for its respectful design and contextual sensitivity while adding something new and unique to the evolving city of Halifax.
