The Portage District General Hospital (PDGH) is a transformative healthcare facility designed to serve Portage La Prairie and its surrounding rural communities. Spanning 270,000 sq. ft. on a fully redeveloped site, PDGH combines functionality and aesthetics. This two-story hospital is poised to elevate healthcare provisions with 114 patient beds, expanded day surgery, an upgraded emergency department, and improved facilities for various services, including inpatient rehab, dialysis, cancer care, mental health, palliative care, diagnostics, and expanded outpatient services.
Beyond its clinical features, PDGH pays homage to local cultures, especially the significant regional Indigenous population. The inclusion of a dedicated cultural space facilitates smudging ceremonies, underscoring a commitment to inclusivity and cultural sensitivity. Approaching PDGH holistically, we consider the emotional, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of healing. Inspired by the resilience of nature, particularly an adjacent oxbow lake, the design prioritizes visual connections to light and nature through interior pathways. PDGH embodies a harmonious fusion of cutting-edge healthcare infrastructure and a holistic healing environment, positioned to serve the community for years to come.
