WINNIPEG, MB – Architecture49 has been selected to lead the design of the new Medical Countermeasures Laboratory Facility, a high-containment research facility for the Public Health Agency of Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory. The 12,860 square metres facility will expand Canada's scientific infrastructure at the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health campus in Winnipeg and support the country's capacity to research, develop and respond to infectious disease threats.

Architecture49 was selected based on a team with extensive experience delivering complex science and research facilities across Canada. Recent federal laboratory projects include the Advanced Materials Research Facility in Mississauga, Ontario, the Sidney Centre for Plant Health in Sidney, British Columbia, and the Transportation Safety and Technology Science Hub currently under development in Ottawa. A49’s Science & Technology portfolio also includes decades of work in high-containment laboratory, health sciences and research environments for federal agencies, academic institutions and science organizations.

"We've had the opportunity to support some of Canada's most specialized science and research facilities over the past several decades," said Kevin Humeniuk, National Sector Leader, Science and Technology at Architecture49. "Being selected for the Medical Countermeasures Laboratory Facility is a privilege, and we look forward to delivering a facility that will support the important work being done at the National Microbiology Laboratory and the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health."

The project builds on Architecture49's experience in science infrastructure, including facilities focused on infectious disease research, laboratory modernization and advanced scientific research. Members of the project team have contributed to projects ranging from vaccine development and public health laboratories to advanced manufacturing and agricultural research facilities across Canada and internationally.

Design work is expected to begin this year, with Architecture49 leading a multidisciplinary team through planning and design for the nationally significant facility.
