Colchester East Hants Health Centre
Truro, Nova Scotia

This Atlantic Canadian regional acute care hospital, like many healthcare projects, had multiple stakeholders and a highly interactive design/user group planning process. To optimize cost-effectiveness, the building was designed to incorporate all aspects of diagnosis and treatment under one roof, clear and functionally organized in a welcoming, easy to navigate manner.

“I really like the idea and concept …. The five vital signs for healthy salutogenic design really resonate for me.  As we spend more time in our new building, the relationship between the vital signs and a healthy environment become stronger.  Having just come through our first summer of living here, the vitality and health promoting effects of the building are strong and growing.”
Peter McKinnon, CEO, Colchester East Hants Health Authority

The 124-bed facility is supported by medical, surgical, palliative care, mental health, critical care, emergency and ambulatory care services. The plan takes advantage of the site topography, with creative and effective solutions for parking, circulation, shipping and receiving, and storm water management.

Primary hospital elements—ambulatory care, diagnosis/treatment, and in-patient units—are connected by a light-filled Galleria which acts a central gathering point, with a clear circulation process for patients and visitors. The facility delivers medical, clinical and support services cost-efficiently, while providing a supportive environment to care for patients, families and staff. It also features a healing garden with accessible green spaces.
