Avani Centre, Surrey, British Columia (in joint venture with ACDF Architecture)

The new mixed-use Avani Centre is located in the growing area of Surrey, now the second largest city in the province of B.C. It is comprised of a residential tower of 181 units, a Hampton by Hilton hotel with 112 rooms and three conference rooms, and eight two-storey townhouses.

The diversity of the programmatic elements within the project influence the tectonic approach to texture and materiality. The transparency of the ground levels ensures the link to the public realm on the neighbouring streets, whether it be on 98th street or King George Highway. The hotel levels are then expressed as a textured volume with a graphic treatment. Between the hotel and residential portions of the tower, the eighth floor is slated to become an indoor and amenity space for residents. Indoor amenities for residents include a meeting room, two multi-purpose spaces with a kitchen while outdoor amenities on the podium’s rooftop consist of a seating area, a BBQ area, outdoor fire pit, dog play area, an outdoor exercise area, and a multi-purpose lawn area. Other indoor amenities within the seventh floor, such as a fitness centre and swimming pool, will be shared between hotel guests and residents.

To emphasise the dynamic look of the tower, the interchanging rotated floor slabs create an interesting visual effect in the panorama of the city’s skyline.
