  • Faculty of Engineering Functional Program, University of Manitoba
  • Faculty of Engineering Functional Program, University of Manitoba

The Faculty of Engineering is one of the largest faculties on University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry Campus with 1,550 full time equivalent students with six curriculum streams. To meet demand for professional engineers, the Faculty of Engineering has expanded enrolment of undergraduate programs by 48% since 2008.

The project encompassed functional programming services for options related to existing academic buildings part of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus, as well as an estimate of capital costs based upon programming and buildable area projections.

The Functional Program reviewed existing Faculty of Engineering buildings, including spaces occupied by other units or departments, identified space needs for academic and administration requirements, caretaking rooms, voice data rooms, recycling rooms, loading/receiving, and other service support functions, and a Class D Cost Estimate including estimated costs for renovated space, reconfigured space, and potential new construction. It involved the following:

  • Assessed the space needs of the Faculty of Engineering and other Units/Departments currently housed in Engineering buildings.
  • Proposed reconfiguration of existing space for improved efficiency.
  • Explored opportunities for co-location and shared resources.
  • Identified programs and/or external units that could not be adequately accommodated to inform renovation, reconfiguration or construction of future engineering facilities on campus.
  • Contemplation of new construction opportunities and identifying programming synergies.
