Tideview Terrace Long Term Care Facility

Digby, Nova Scotia (in collaboration with Montgomery Sisam Architects)

Tideview Terrace overlooking the Bay of Fundy is a 90-bed long term care facility with 18 beds dedicated to residential care. The facility was designed to achieve improved and expanded services in a healthy and pleasant living and working environment. It is a highly functional building – accommodating modern technologies, clinical education space, and an expanding community role - while also providing a warm and friendly atmosphere. To create a more intimate and home-like space, the facility was designed as smaller, residentially-scaled houses, with each nine-bedroom house having its own kitchen, dining room, living room, and laundry room. In addition, each resident house is served by its own front door, and the covered porches, lanterns, and ship-lap siding contribute to a maritime house-like feeling.

“Our design approach has always been to challenge the tradition model and introduce new patterns of use and liveability – fully exploiting the therapeutic qualities of home and nature.” Sarah Prodor, Healthcare Practice Leader

Designed following sustainable principles, Tideview Terrace achieved LEED Silver Certification through the use of energy efficient systems including a geothermal system, solar heated domestic hot water, water savings devices and low water use irrigation, as well as sustainable materials, natural daylighting that makes use of ‘light towers’ that also help with natural ventilation.
