Canada’s Coolest New Art Museum Isn’t in Toronto (Surface)

The new Remai Modern Art Gallery may be the most impressive arts venue you’ve never heard of, thanks to its location in Saskatoon, a thriving—if overlooked—city on the Canadian prairie of Saskatchewan. Designed by Toronto architects KPMB and housing a permanent collection of more than 8,000 objects—including a comprehensive collection of Picasso’s linocuts and major works by contemporary indigenous artists—the building is a masterpiece, encompassing four cantilevered copper-clad boxes overlooking the South Saskatchewan River. Each is arranged around an atrium that disperses natural light throughout the space. A glass-covered ground floor visually connects the site, the landscape, and the art itself.
